Cody takes home heads-up victory

Fledgling poker pro Jake Cody has marked his entry into the elite of the poker world with a stunning victory in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) $25k Heads-Up Championship.

The 22-year-old from Rochdale in the UK defeated Yevgeniy Timoshenko in the final table tussle that was worth a winner's check for a staggering $851,192 - comfortably the biggest ever check for a tournament of this type in the history of the WSOP.

Cody's victory in the heads-up event at the Rio in Las Vegas follows his win in January last year in the European Poker Tour (EPT) tournament in Deauville. It was the first of his career, but Cody said that this latest triumph has topped it.

He said: "Even though the EPT was my first really big win, this one was the most special."

In total, the prize pot of the WSOP $25k Heads-Up Championship comfortably dwarfed that seen for an event of this type in the past, pushing the record prize pool up from $2.406 million to $3.04 million.
