Kansas casino application deadline extended

The application deadline for the Cherokee county casino has been extended to October 19th by the Kansas Lottery Commission.

This is after Penn National Gaming withdrew its bid, citing new local competition and its failure to win the state contract in Sumner county as reasons.

However, the Cherokee County Commission remains confident that an application will eventually come.

Richard Hilderbrand, the commissioner, said that the installation of water and sewers near the venue could help encourage more businesses and casino applicants to the region, reports Koam TV.

"Obviously the way the economy is and funds it's not something we can just go out and do but it's something we are looking at," he commented.

When Penn National Gaming announced plans to build a casino in the area, it put forward proposals for a $295 million hotel and casino complex.

At the time (August 2007), Tim Shallenburger, who represented the casino operator, said the region represented "a pretty good market that's untapped", reported the Associated Press.
