Poker tournaments with big buy-ins, such as events from the World Poker Tour, European Poker Tour and World Series of Poker, will not be too heavily affected by the credit crunch, one expert has suggested.
Dave Woods of PokerPlayer Magazine said that many people do not pay to enter such competitions themselves, qualifying either through satellites or having their seats bought for them by benefactors.
The editor-in-chief said that the economy will have some effect upon the world of poker, as it will all industries, but that any real detriment has yet to be seen, with recent reports claiming that online poker is on the increase due to people staying in to save money.
Commenting on how he expects tournaments to be hit, he added: "The high-end buy-ins will be the least affected because a lot of players actually get brought into these events by sponsors."
PokerPlayer is the biggest-selling poker publication in the UK, with a new edition issued every month.
