Poker is a game that is accessible to people from all walks of life, it has been suggested.
Alan Bowden, the editor of InsidePoker Magazine, implied that the ability of ordinary cards enthusiasts to take on the best competitors, as well as celebrities, is almost unparalleled in world sport.
"It's a sport that's open to everyone," he remarked, adding that some may draw inspiration "when they realise that they are playing on the same level playing field" as people they look up to.
Steve Davis and Shane Warne were two celebrities-turned-card sharps mentioned by Mr Bowden.
He explained that few people would ever get the opportunity to play Davis at snooker or Warne at cricket, but anybody with enough money to enter a poker tournament can compete against them on the felt.
Both men were in Las Vegas for this year's World Series of Poker main event, which cost $10,000 to enter.
