Poker popular at Yale, report claims

Poker is a popular pastime among students at Yale University in Connecticut, it has been suggested.

The former university of poker stars such as Vanessa Selbst and Matt Matros has a poker culture as some fans try to emulate the success of their distinguished alumni, according to a report on Poker News.

Foxwoods casino about an hour's drive away is a popular haunt for players, with daily games and weekly tournaments at 100 poker tables proving a big draw.

Poker News claims Foxwoods offers visitors the chance to get "one of the best poker experiences a student could want", but there is plenty of action closer to Yale itself.

There are various on- and off-campus poker events that students participate in and a few years ago, one student, Alessandro Presti, argued for ESPN to feature poker games during prime time.

In an article for the Yale Herald, he said that the game "embodies the spirit of competition that runs through sports", even though poker fails against the dictionary definition of what sport is.
