Many amateur poker players make a huge mistake by not betting enough money at the right time, an expert has said.
Stuart Rutter, a regular on the European Poker Tour, said a number of players are not ambitious enough and too often settle for winning medium-sized pots, when they could be taking down big ones.
His comments came in his regular strategy column for Poker News.
The Birmingham star, who has made over $100,000 in live tournament play, according to The Mob Poker Database, said people worry too much about getting beaten when they flop a massive hand, despite it being statistically unlikely.
He suggested betting after the flop is a superior tactic than check-raise in these situations, because other players will be less likely to think you have a good hand.
Betting correctly when flopping a big hand is a crucial part of becoming a top player, Rutter implied.
