The Chinese gambling destination of Macau may soon be generating a greater amount of revenue than the US state of Nevada, it has been suggested.
Explaining that Macau's income has not just outstripped Las Vegas, but also the whole of Clark County, the Online Casino Advisory said the area's 24 casinos may soon be taking more than "the entire state".
The website was using the fact that 70 per cent of Macau's revenue comes from high-stake baccarat tables to predict that casinos will increasingly provide for wealthy gamblers only.
In order to compete in the future, casinos will "care almost exclusively" about high-rollers, it said.
Macau appears to be setting the example for how this system can work. Despite having significantly fewer casinos than Nevada, it took only $2.4 billion less in 2007.
A number of Macau's casinos are owned by some of Nevada's biggest casino operators, including Steve Wynn Resorts, MGM Mirage and Las Vegas Sands.
