Gaming revenues down in Mississippi

Gaming revenues in Mississippi fell by $21 million in October - down to $218 million from $239 million in September, it has been reported.

The October figures were even lower than they were in 2006, by $3.4 million, the Associated Press (AP) said.

A fall in revenue may come as a surprise to some as it was earlier reported by the St Petersburg Times that Mississippi's coast casinos were having their best year ever.

The industry in the state was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina, but following £1.7 billion worth of investment, the eleven casinos in the Gulf Coast region now average about 5,000 visitors a day each.

Casinos on the coast were the worst hit, according to the AP, with a $24.3 million drop.

The figures do not include the opening of the Biloxi Bay Bridge on November 1st and also refer to gross revenue, as opposed to net.
