China's super-rich and other VIPs are expected to flock to the world's biggest casino in Macao.
Already tens of thousands of wealthy gamblers have spent their money in the new Venetian Macao, which is decked out with 850 gaming tables and 4,100 slot machines.
The casino resort boasts 3,000 five-star luxury suites, an indoor canal, a 15,000-seat sports arena, 93,000 sq m of retail space that includes big brands such as Versace and Tiffany, luxury boutiques and fine restaurants.
High-rollers are greeted by Italian-style frescos that adorn the walls and ceilings, as well as a full-size replica of Venice's Bridge of Sighs.
Sheldon Adelson, chief executive of Las Vegas Sands, which is in charge of the casino, said it was "the beginning of what has been a dream of mine".
"We are quite certain we are going to meet the expectations of everybody that has anticipated this arrival," he told reporters.
In 2006, gaming revenues in Macao totalled $7.2 billion, overtaking the Las Vegas Strip for the first time.
