Macau generated more casino revenue than Las Vegas for the first time last year, new figures reveal.
The Chinese territory took over $7 billion in 2006 compared to Las Vegas' $6.6 billion, according to new GDP figures released by the region.
Analysts had previously estimated that such a change was likely to have taken place, but the new statistics represent the first official confirmation.
"This once again showcases that Macau continues to have an upward trajectory of tourism activity being led by the casino gaming industry, said Jonathon Galaviz of analyst Globalysis, referring to increased investment in the region, according to news.com.au,
"Macau's combination of GDP growth and casino revenue growth is continuing to be driven by significant growth in disposable income of mainland Chinese citizens," he added.
Research from broker CLSA suggests that the average table in Macau earns three times the amount earned by a Vegas equivalent.
