The Tropicana Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada is set to celebrate 50 years in business with an upgrade that could cost up to $2.5 billion, it has been reported.
The Associated Press has noted that an extensive expansion and renovation project is set to see much of the casino overturned as part of a project to boost room capacity from 1,880 to over 10,000 by 2010.
New slot machines and other games are also likely to be introduced, though many famous features such as the stained glass ceiling may be destroyed.
"[The resort is] a relic of the past we admire and respect, and we would like to see it work out going forward, but I don't think it will. It needs to be updated, it needs to be freshened," said Rich Fitzpatrick, senior vice president and chief financial officer of owners Columbia Entertainment told the Associated Press.
In total four new towers will be built around the resort, which is to remain open while work takes place.
