David May made history with his win at the Manchester United Poker Legends Challenge.
The former United defender beat the other seven players in the televised tournament, including a professional poker player to win £2,500 for Christie's hospital.
"It was nerve-wracking but once I got through to the final three, I was okay," he said, claiming also that he often plays poker with his family.
"All I wanted to do was raise money for charity so to get through to the final three was brilliant."
The second and third prize were also happy about the outcome; with second prize winner Grand National jockey Tony Dobbin donating £1,500 to the Injured Jockeys' Fund and MU legend Lou Macari donating his £1,000 third place prize to a brain tumor patient from his hometown.
