An online gambling standards group has reiterated its belief that consistent and well-vetted standards are the key to providing a fair gaming experience for customers.
The eCOGRA (eCommerce and Online Gambling Regulation and Assurance) body has made the comments following the recent legislative measures introduced in the US.
The group fears that the moves could bring about a flood of unregulated sites in areas that established companies have vacated.
"Professional and integrity-driven conduct to best practice standards by properly monitored online gambling establishments is critical to the future success of the industry," said Andrew Beveridge, eCOGRA's CEO.
"eCOGRA believes that the regulation of online gambling operators is far more effective and safer for the players than attempts to prohibit a form of internet entertainment that is popular with literally tens of millions of responsible gamblers around the globe," he added in reference to the situation in the US.
Some 112 online gaming sites are currently signed up to the body's code of conduct.
