US voters are strongly opposed to any sort of ban on online gambling, a new poll claims.
A survey by public opinion group Zogby International found that 78 per cent of likely voters do not think it is appropriate for the federal government to "restrict what adults do on the internet in the privacy of their own homes".
A new website promoting online gambling and debunking myths about it, OnlineGamblingMythsAndFacts.com (OGMF), has been set up.
The poll of 30,000 people this month indicates that Americans do not want the federal government to place restrictions on online gambling and other online recreational activities.
Around 80 per cent of those quizzed said that they were against bills before Congress to ban online gaming and the federal government's moves to ban Americans from gambling over the internet.
OGMF said in a statement: "The will of American voters is absolutely and unmistakably clear in the area of how and when an adult American should be able to engage in private recreational activities such as online gambling, and Congress should respect this freedom of choice."
Gambling on the internet has boomed in recent years, with more and more websites attracting an increasingly diverse customer base.
